Description

15.5" x 19.5" framed portrait of Deacon James Hatch (1796 - 1878). Technique is a 19th c. techbnique called Photographic Crayon whereby a photograph is used as a sketch, then en- hanced using artists' crayons (finely ground pigments mixed wth a binder such as wax, gum tragacanth or clay, pressed into a stick) . Deacon James Hatch's granddaughter married Amasa Williams, grandfather of the donor, and the portraits were hung in a house on part of what was originally the Hatch farm. Ornate wood frame 29.25"x31" is oak and gilded plasterwork.
