Description

38" chisel from Keller Point stone quarry. It is 38" long with a squared know at the top, a round shaft of c. 1" diameter x 8" L to a 2" d. knob, then square shaft to the chisel end. According to Ernest Case, former owner of the property, the quarry was active during the 19th and early 20th centuries, with a large dock on the shore to transfer the stone as ballast for sailing ships. In 1950 there was a workshop/dwelling at top of the quarry where Jake Fairfield lived. He had worked on the crew that bored holes and set dynamite charges; Jake lost an eye during a premature blast. Jake was grandfather to Fernald (Frank) Fairfield.
