Scope and Content

Ruled notebook, 6 1/2 inches x 8 inches, brown marbled cardboard covers, in fair condition. Doodles and math calculations on inside front cover. First pages display a poem / declamation that begins thus: "Though Sorrow's clouds are oer us now / and I must soon depart / Perhaps for years in distant climes / to roam with aching heart." Subsequent pages include names of various barks and brigs the writer has shipped on, the cash on hand, drafts of letters, poetry, drawings and doodles, and calculations. Wonderful draft of a love letter signed by Joseph L. Trim, written in Bermuda, Sept 1862--the name Rebecca E Staples of Islesboro, Maine, appears on another page, perhaps the letter was for her.
