Large whelk shell, probably a purple whelk and of the genus Murex. Overall measurements are 7 3/4 inches long, 4 1/2 inches at its widest part and about 3 1/2 inches at its highest. It is conical shaped, open at one end with the opposite end coming to an apex with whorls of ridges becoming larger as they extend from the apex. The dry shell is blue-grey in color.
PERSONAL ASSOCIATIONS: Probably collected by Dick Steele's grandfather (Captain James Calvin Scott) on one of his trips to the South Seas.
