Description

Calcareous algae (not identified as to Family, etc. ) Collection contains approximately 25 - 30 pieces of hard white "sticks" or branches of lime-secreting algae. Sticks are of variable length, and diameter ranges from 1/8 inch to 5/16 inch. The shape of the sticks is also variable, some of which are straight, some wavy or curvy and some also forked. The longest stick (which is really part of the organism) is 4 1/2 inches. The sticks are divided into sections by dark brown bands that encircle the sticks. (Some of the sticks have been painted in a gold color.) The spacing between the bands is also variable. The size of the organism cannot be derived from the examination of the pieces. Also a small box of 5 fish teeth, labeled .037C PERSONAL ASSOCIATIONS: Dick Steele's grandfather, Captain James Calvin Scott, probably brought these from the South Seas.
