A black metal box, 15 7/8 inches x 11 1/4 inches x 6 1/4 inches, with a handle on the top, 16 7/8 inches x 6 1/4 inches and a cover, 15 7/8 inches x 11 1/4 inches on the side. The box is meant to be carried like a suitcase. The top has hangers on the back so that the kit can be hung on the wall. The cover opens out. It latches onto the edge of the top so that the cover will stay closed. The face of the cover contains the following inscription in gold letters outlined in red: "Johnson's No. 1 FIRST AID CABINET (then a red cross) Containing Articles FOR Accident Emergency Use Johnson & Johnson NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. U.S.A. MADE IN U.S.A." On the inside of the cover are the following inscriptions (black lettering on a gold background): "THIS DOOR SHOULD BE KEPT CLOSED." (Con't on reverse side) "First Aid Box from School here --" meaning the present site of the Islesboro Historical Society.
Inside the box are three drawers each with a ring type drawer pull.
Top Drawer, 15 1/2 inches x 5 5/8 inches x 3 1/2 inches, contains the following inscriptions: Top middle "SPECIFY J & J PRODUCTS". Left side: "Four 3 in. X 5 yds. Muslin bandages, Six 2 in. X 5 yds. Muslin Bandages, Four Wooden Splints". On the right Side: "Four 1 in. X 10 yds. Gauze Bandages, Eight 2 in. X 10 yds. Gauze Bandages, Six 2 1/2 in. X 10 Gauze Bandages, One 1 in. X 5 yds. Z. O. Adhesive Plaster."
Middle Drawer, 10 5/8 inches x 5 5/8 inches x 3 1/2 inches. Top middle: "SPECIFY J & J PRODUCTS" On the left side: "Six Finger Cots (Assorted Sizes), Four Pictric Acid Gauze pads, 3 1/2 in. X 36 in., One First Aid for Wounds No. 3, One 3 oz. Tube Carbolized Petrolatum". On the right side: "One Tourniquet, One Esmarch Triangular Bandage No. 14, one pair of Scissors, One pair Tweezers".
Bottom Drawer, 10 5/8 inches x 5 5/8 inches x 3 1/2 inches Top middle: "SPECIFY J & J PRODUCTS" On the left side: "Two 4 oz. pkgs. Absorbent Cotton, One Box Band-Aid" On the right side: "Four 1 yd. pkgs Absorbent Gauze Plain, Safety Pins (12 small - 6 large), Twelve Applicator Sticks, with Cotton."
Underneath the top drawer and to the right of the two smaller drawers is a space 7 1/2 inches tall, 4 1/2 inches wide, 6 1/4 inches deep. On the back of the cover are the following inscriptions: "One ounce of Camphenol, Two ounces Solution of Iodine, Two ounces Aromatic Spirits Ammonia, One 8 ounce bottle for Camphenol Solution."
