A piece of leather 1/4 inch thick and 12 inches long of varying width. It is designed to encircle the back of the hand and the palm. The widest part is
2 inches and fits into the palm of the hand. There is a deep curve cut into part of the palm area, the ends of which are tied together. This area accommodates the thumb. In the palm next to the thumb "hole" is a raised piece of metal containing depressions to accommodate the base of a needle. The metal is attached to the sailor's palm with a closely stitched leather surround. The sailor's palm is used to push a needle through tough cloth, such as canvas.
