Description

C D Gibson plate. Royal Doulton plate (ceramic material and blue and black pigments), measuring 10 1/4 inches in diameter covered with repeating patterns of stylized leaves in the 2 outer rings and stylized blossoms in the 3rd partial ring. The contents of the rings are colored white and various shades of blue. The center of the dish contains a picture (pen and ink sketch by Charles Dana Gibson) measuring 5 inches x 5 inches. Description of sketch: a young woman wearing a long black dress with long sleeves and wearing an upswept hairdo is lyng on a couch on her stomach with her chest raised up by pillows reading a book. In back of the couch to the left is a bookcase containing some standing and some leaning books, a large drawn drape and a chest of drawers to the right. On the floor next to the woman is a disorderly collection of books. INSCRIPTION AT BOTTOM OF SKETCH: SHE LOOKS FOR RELIEF AMONG SOME OF THE OLD ONES.
