Scope and Content

Two packets of letters from Nathan Pendleton (b. August 29, 1845) to his parents, Nancy and Richmond Pendleton, circa 1863-1865. A letter of October 8, 1863, written from Hilton Head General Hospital, refers to his poor health and slow recovery. A letter from the assistant surgeon at the hospital dated January 6, 1864, says that Nathan is not yet ready to be discharged. A letter written March 25, 1864, finds him aboard the hospital steamer "Cosmopolitan," thin, tired, and very homesick. (The March 1864 letter is cataloged with its enclosing envelope and transcription as 2021.013.063.)
