Donor called this box a "ditty box" -- sailor's storage box for personal gear. Made like a seaman's chest, 19" x 8" x 8". Hinged lid overlapping the sides, similarly bound around bottom side/bottom seam. No handles. Dovetailed corners. Homemade by an accomplished carpenter. Pine? Inside at left side a small container, 3" deep, with hinged lid. This box was inherited by Bill Collins, husband of Geneva Pendleton (some connection with the Hutchesons' house); states that box had belonged to his father or grandfather.
