Description

Found August 30th, 2007 at BigTree Beach on Seal Harbor by Benjamin Scammell, grandson of the Hathaways of Pendleton Point Road. A photograph was sent to Steven Cox, authority on Native Americans in Maine. He replied that this type of arrowhead or spearhead was used from7000-1500 years ago; from the Middle Ceramic or Middle Woodland period. It is volcanic rock, either rhyolite or felsite from a local Penobscot Bay volcanic, or it could be Kineo rhyolite, a material that outcrops around Moosehead Lake, but was brought down to the central coast in some quanity by glacial transport during the last Ice Age.
