Description

Elgin Ship Watch in wood case with a leather strap (broken). Medallion on the case shows "Elgin National Watch Company 16748942.", This outer case measures 7.5" x 7.5" x 8.5" high. Inside this case is a smaller wooden case measuring 5" x 5" x 5.5" h, protected by heavy padding. A brass plaque on top of this case is engraved "U.S.S.B. SHIP WATCH NO. 523." This case, also by Elgin and so marked, opens in two ways: the top opens to show the watch under a protective glass shield; it also opens in the middle to the watch itself which is held by a brass gimbel. The white enamel watch dial is 2" in diameter, "Elgin National Watch Co." printed across center of dial. the hours marked in Roman Numerals, minutes marked on the main dial, with a small seconds dial 0-60, and a second small dial counting 0 to 40. The donor states that it was used on a ship of the Pendleton Fleet.
