Description

Aged bronze metal frame for the mail slot in the post office building next to The Islesborough, a hotel at Ryder's Cove, now destroyed (see attached picture). The little post office building was decommissioned when the Pripet P O was built on the Main Road above Warren's (Pripet) Landing in North Islesboro. The Ryder P O building fell into disrepair and was finally burned (1930s?); Alice Leighton found this in the ashes. This piece is 8" wide, 3" high; in center a metal flap closing the opening. It was molded with decorative designs, may be considered "Renaissance Revival" style, mid-to-late 19th c.
