Description

Artist depiction of the wreck of Brig Almira: An artist’s conception of the scene of rescue after the foundering of the Brig Almira. The Brig Almira, under Captain Tolman Pendleton, was carrying lumber from Bangor to Boston in October 1876, when it experienced a heavy gale of wind and washed to pieces at sea. The crew made a raft of the lumber and were on it seven days in wintry weather until rescued by fishermen. Hobart dodge and Lyonnais Pendleton, brother of Tolman, survived. Captain Tolman Pendleton died of exposure. This is an old sketch/print featuring four men on top of a floating pile of lumber, presumably parts from their wrecked ship. Two men are sitting up and looking in the distance, while two other are laying near them.
