Scope and Content

This collection focuses on the history and long-term impact of the Jacksonville Consolidation. James C. Rinaman Jr. donated the collection to the Jacksonville Historical Society. He has been slowly adding on to the collection over the years. Rinaman was heavily involved in the process of consolidating the city and county governments in the 1960s. He was an appointed member of the Local Government Study Commission that ultimately recommended a consolidated government - a reform that promised political and economical improvements. The collection includes official documents, letters, meeting minutes and newspaper clippings that Rinaman has kept over the years including The Southern Academy of Letters, Arts and Sciences, Inc. (SALAS). The earliest document in the collection dates back to 1934, thirty-four years prior to the enactment of consolidation in October 1968.

Description

This folder contains newspaper clippings and the proposal for the Jacksonville People Mover, more commonly known as the Downtown Skyway. James C. Rinaman Jr. was directly involved in the implementation of the people mover and stated in one of the documents: "...though generally the citizens of Jacksonville seem to be apathetic about the People Mover, many downtown oriented people are enthusiastic..." Description

The JEDC'S purpose is "to provide coordination for Jacksonville's public and private economic efforts, and to build consensus, commitment, and continuity for those initiatives." This contains correspondence between two mayors - John Delaney and Edward Austin - and James C.
