Scope and Content

Extensive and well-researched information regarding the creation, construction, and history of Memorial Park in Riverside. Papers, which include copies of originals located in The Library of Congress, provide information concerning the prestigious Olmsted Brothers Firm and James Frederick Dawson (the architect representing the firm), as well as information on the esteemed sculptor Adrian Pillars of St. Augustine, Florida, both of whom were selected to use their talents in the creation of the Park. In addition, this collection includes minutes from the Memorial Park Association, and correspondence between the Association, The Olmsted Brothers Firm, Pillars, and Ninah Cummer. Photographs and drawings of the Park and the statue designed by Pillars titled "Winged Victory," are also included, as well as copies of plans received from the Frederick Law Olmsted National Historical Site. Donated by past President Anne Freeman (1986-2006), this collection provides a concise record of the evolution of this important local landmark. Along with Mrs. Freeman's donation is a collection of papers, photographs, and maps of Memorial Park donated by R. B. Burroughs, past member of the Memorial Park Association as well as a City Council member. Mr. Burroughs has donated information such as past minutes of the Association, correspondence from those donating to the Park, original newspaper articles, and important information regarding the upkeep of the park and statue. This includes recommendations from The Conservation Group for the maintenance for "Life," as well as recommendations for the repair of the balustrades in the park. An original letter from Pillars is among the objects in this collection, as well as original blueprints from the Olmsted Brothers that were created in the early 1920's. Unique to this donation is the original program for the opening of the park on Christmas Day in 1924. Mr. Burroughs's organized donation reflects the success of the Association in keeping the public aware and interested in this important Jacksonville public space and artistic monument.
