Selected Black history: March 10, 1863 the third occupation of Jacksonville by Colonel T. W. Higginson, commander of the 1st SC Volunteers (the first African American regiment)]and Colonel James Montgomery of the 2nd South Carolina ( a regiment of troops consisting entirely of free blacks and refugee former slaves) was accomplished. Many of the Blacks were from Florida -- Senator Holmes Steele led the fight to protect Blacks from oppressive Black Codes after war -- Arrest of Black barber, Alex DeLyon in 1876 -- Daniel established a Sunday school class for Blacks at St. Johns Church, and was a founder and trustee of New Hampton School, a non-sectarian Black college located on King's Road -- Black/ white population 1888 during Yellow Fever epidemic -- Colored Auxiliary Board established during Yellow Fever Epidemic -- James Weldon Johnson hired during 1888 as timekeeper for road builders.
