Osceola, steamer, Ships, Ship, hyacinth, Florida, Merrill-Stevens Co., Jacksonville, SteamshipDescription
Two (2) images of the Clyde Line steamship "Osceola". In 1914, the Clyde Line had a replacement vessel for "Frederkick DeBary" built in Jacksonville. This vessel, built by the Merrill-Stevens Company, was the recessed-sternwheeler "Osceola". The "Osceola" was a very unusual vessel as she had all the outward appearances of a propeller craft but was powered by an enclosed sternwheel, not visible to the casual viewer. The enclosed sternwheel design was due to water hyacinths on the St. Johns. The enclosure kept the nuisance aquatic plants from being snarled up in the wheels. The Jacksonville skyline is present in the background.Collection
