St. Johns Bluff Fortifications in Jacksonville, Florida dated to 1862 (during the Civil War). Image shows the heavily armed position captured by the Yankees.
Confederate General Joseph Finegan ordered the construction of batteries on opposite sides of the river at St. Johns Bluff and Yellow Bluff in 1862, to prevent Federal gunboats from coming up the river. For several months, these fortifications were succcesful, and not a single boat made it past. In October 1862, an overland invasion of 1,00 Northern troops chased the rebels from their stronghold, and Union gunboats once again controlled the St. Johns River.Collection
