First Church of Christ Scientist
1304 Laura Street (now 1116 North Laura Street)
Architect: Marsh and Saxelbye
Built in 1921, it is a departure from the usual ecclesiastical styles found in Jacksonville at the time of construction. The building overlooks open space along Hogans Creek and is an impressive entrance to Springfield, with an impossing Neo-Classical Revival facade highlighted by Doric columns with no steeple or bell tower.
The congregation of this church began in 1892, when the first Christian Science Society meeting was held at the home of Mrs. James Douglas. They organized in 1897, and occupied several buildings until the 1921 construction of this sanctuary, which cost $80,000.
In 1993, the building became the headquarters for the Karpeles Manuscript Library Museum.Collection
