First Presbyterian Church
SE corner of Monroe and Ocean (118 E Monroe Street)
Architect: Wilson & Edwards (South Carolina)
In 1847, Captain Obadiah Congar, one of the founders of First Presbyterian, donated property on Monroe Street for the construction of the church. The building was destroyed by the Great Fire of 1901 and was rebuilt and completed for service June 1, 1902.
It was built in Gothic Revival style, featuring gargyles atop the bell tower, lancet windows, crenelared and pierced parapets, window tracery, buttresses, and pinnacles with foliate protuberances called "crokets". It was constructed of rough-cut Indiana limestone, with alternating courses of wide and narrow stones.
In 1927-28, the building was remodled and enlarged, with the roofline of the main sanctuary being changed from a six-sided conical shape to a steeply pitched ridge roof.
First Presbyterian is considered one of Jacksonville's oldest congregations, beginning in 1840.Collection
