Description

San Juline Apartments 1251-55 Riverside Ave. (1617-1637 Riverside Ave.) Architect: Roy A. Benjamin Roy A. Benjamin and H.F. McAden teamed up for many years (1914-25) and built apartment complex buildings throughout Jacksonville. The grandest was the San Juline. The San Juline's original owner was Julian Prewitte who had bought the mansion of Colonel Raymond Cay in 1915. Prewitte lived in the mansion while the San Juline was being built. Upon its completion, the apartment building was touted to have every major amenity known, including steam heat, gas and speaking tubes. All fourteen of the apartments faced the river (Memorial Park would not be completed until 1924) and the thinness of the building gave every apartment rear exposure, so as to allow for ventilation. The building was constructed in the Prairie style of architecture. In 1982, the San Juline was converted from apartments to condominiums.
