Description

American Legion, Edward C. DeSaussure Post No. 9 221 West Church Street The first meeting held in Jacksonville by a number ex-service men on May 21, 1919, for the purpose of organizing an American Legion post in Jacksonville. 164 members signed a temporary charter was signed June 3 of the same year. A permanent charter was issued from the National Headquarters at Indianapolis on August 2, 1923, and signed by the Department of Florida on August 16. W.D. Vinzant was the first Post Commander and the building was first occupied on November 23, 1923. The Post is named for a Jacksonville young man who was killed at Sommerance, France in the Argonne Forest drive.
