Description

Barnett National Bank Building 112 West Adams Street Architect: Mowbray & Uffinger Completed in 1926, it was the largest of the skyscrapers in Jacksonville at 18 stories tall. Barnett Bank was founded in 1877 by William B. Barnett and his son, Bion with $40,000 in working capital. Within just four years, it became the largest bank in Florida. In 1888, the bank changed its name to National Bank of JAcksonville and in 1908 to Barnett National Bank. This building cost $1,500,000 to build and remained the tallest building in Jacksonville until 1954, when the Prudential Building was constructed. Mowbray and Uffinger were nationally known bank architects from New York and the contractor, James Stewart Co., constructed Madison Square Garden in New York and the Mitsui Bank in Tokyo.
