Of the very few residential structures remaining in East Jacksonville, the James E. Merrill Residence, originally at 229 Lafayette Street is one of the largest and most architecturally significant. Possibly dating to 1879, the house was constructed just ten years after the platting of this section of East Jacksonville in 1869.
Prior to 1894 Lafayette Street was known as Louisa Street.
