Scottish Rite Masonic Temple
965 Hubbard Street
Architect: Hyman W. Witcover & Roy A. Benjamin
This temple for the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry is one of four buildings in Duval County that reflect the Egyptian Revival style. This building has a smooth, monolithic facade, embellished with hieroglyphics and bas-relief Egyptian characters on panels flanking the main entrance. A pair of sculpted two-headed birds atop the main entrance and a second pair of crowned birds that guard the upper corners of the building are some of the other Egyptian motifs of the building.
This building was constructed at a cost of $300,000 and was the first permanent home of the Jacksonville Scottish Rite Masons (formed in 1892).Collection
