Description

Three-Ten West Church Street Apartments 310 W Church Street Architect: Hentz, Reid & Adler In 1924, this building was described as "Jacksonville's first big downtown apartment building". Completed in 1923, for $300,000, the downtown apartment was well accepted because the building was completely rented before it was completed. The architectural firm designed the building with wide courtyards so that most of the fifty apartments could occupy corner locations. The design style reflects Georgian Revival and the light colored limestone contrasts nicely with the English-bond red brick. In 1947, it became the Hotel Southland. After WWII, General George W. Griner , commander of the Army's 27th Division on Saipan and Okinama took it over and made it the Griner Hotel (1949-54). The entrance was moved from 310 W Church Street to 420 Julia Street. In 1950, Griner sold the place to Chicago interests for about $500,000, making it Jacksonville's largest real-estate deal of the year. It was named the Ambassador Hotel in 1955 This building was placed on the National Register for Historic sites in 1983. The building was condemned in the early 2000s.
