Jacksonville City Hall, 1910s.
Klutho won an open competition against nine others for building a new city hall in 1901. On November 3, 1901 the "Times-Union and Citizen" ran a front-page story with the architectural drawing of the winning design.
The building was planned in the shape of an H with a 40-foot square in the center and a rectangle 44' x 62' on each side, providing public circulation and cross-ventilation. The center provided a grand marble staircase 14' wide. Over the staircase was a 40' diameter dome, docorated with murals by New York artist John O'Neil.
On March 3, 1903, the City Hall officially opened with ceremony and music throughout the evening. The various departments of city government were settled in their new headquarters by March 18, 1903.
The building was demolished in the 1960s to make way for the new Haydon Burns Library.
