Public Free Library
Architect: Henry J. Klutho
In a narrowly approved referendum voters agreed to accept philanthropist Andrew Carnegie's money to build a library for the city. In 1903, Henry J. Klutho design won a competition held by the City of Jacksonville to build the library. The Neo-Classical Revival design features a pedimented portico supported by four massive columns whose capitals are highlighted with the faces of great men of knowledge - Aristotle, Plato, Shakespeare and Euclid.
This building served as Jacksonville's main library until 1965. It was purchased from the City of Jacksonville in 1983 and renovated by the law firm of Bedell, Dittmar, DeVault, Pillans & Gentry.
