Union Congregational Church
The Congregational Church of Jacksonville began in 1875, at the residence of William Stetson. A location was selected for a chapel at the southwest corner of Church and Hogan Streets. The Union Congregational Church of Jacksonville was organized January 9, 1976, with 19 members on the same day the chapel was dedicated.
In 1898, the small chapel was moved on on its site the foundation for a brick church was laid. This church building burned in the Fire of 1901.
The new church was rebuilt and opened April 12, 1903, at a cost of $22,000 in the style of Old English Gothic.
On the account of street noises during service hours the trustees decided to sell the church property and rebuild elsewhere. They moved to the present site, the south side of Church Street between Hogan and Julia, and construction began in June 1912. During the building, the congregation worshipped with the Jewish synagogue. The new church was offically opened June 15, 1913. It was constructed of white brick and terra cotta.Collection
