Description

Steamer "Ashbee" at the docks of the Merrill-Stevens Shipbuilding Corporation on August 1, 1919. This ship was built by the Merrill-Stevens Shipbuilding Corporation as directed by the United States Shipping Board, an emergency agency established by the Shipping Act (September 7, 1916). United States maritime had been eroding for decades and European shipping companies were dominating overseas trade so a board of five men, apppointed by the President, was created to address this problem beginning in 1914 (and so resulted the Shipping Act). It was abolished on March 2, 1934 but went on as many other entities and currently exisits as the United States Maritime Administration of the United States Department of Transportation (established in 1981). The Ashbee was USSB#13, created as a cargo ship with a carrying capicity of 5,750 tons. It was delivered August 19, 1919. The Ashbee was renamed: 1927: Silverspruce 1936: Samoan 1937: Norse Lade 1948: Rolla 1961: Daiei 1965: Scrapped for pieces in this year.
