SS Hiawatha was built in 1904, by the Buckeye Foundry and Machine Ships of Keokuk, Iowa, as the last Hart Line Steamer, which ran from Palatka, on the St. Johns River, up the Ocklawaha to Silver Springs and then finally to Lake Harris (almost 100 miles).
The Hiawatha was 86' feet long and could carry up to 90 passengers (10 would be on the deck), 10 cabins on the saloon deck, 18 on the upper deck and a dining room below the pilot house.
The Hiawatha was a recessed sternwheeler and had three decks.
In 1910s, the Hiawatha was pulled up to repair ways at Hart Point, across the St. Johns River from Palatka, where it remained until the 1970s.Collection
