"Joseph Woodrow Hatchett (b. 1932) was a judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit and the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit. Middle District of Florida Hatchett served as a federal magistrate judge for the United States District Court for the Middle District of Florida from 1971-1975. Fifth Circuit Hatchett was nominated to the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit by Jimmy Carter on May 17, 1979, to a new seat created by 92 Stat. 1629. He was confirmed by the Senate on July 12, 1979, and received his commission on July 13, 1979. He left the court on October 1, 1981, due to assignment to the Eleventh Circuit. Eleventh Circuit Judge Hatchett was reassigned to the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit on October 1, 1981. He served as the court's chief judge from 1996 to 1999.
