Built in 1901 in Germany as SS "Breslaw" for the Bremen to Baltimore and Galveston route, the United States seized the ship in 1917 and commissioned the "Breslaw" into the U.S. Navy as the USS "Bridgeport", a destroyer in World War I.
The "Bridgeport" was decommission in November 1924, and eventually transferred to the U.S. Army in November 1942. After survey the "Bridgeport" was found suitable for conversion and selected as a Hague Convention hospital ship, renamed the USAHS "Larkspur". It was modernized at Merrill-Stevens Dry-Dock and Repair Company from 1943-1944.
In January 1946, the "Larkspur" was converted into transport ship USAT "Bridgeport", destined for returning war brides and other military dependents overseas.
The "Bridgeport" was made into scrap at Mobile, Alabama in 1948.Collection
