Naval Station Mayport with three ships in the carrier basin of NAVSTA Mayport. The two destroyers in front are USS Blandy (DD-943), right, and USS Benham (DD-796), left. In the background, the USS Boston (CA-69/CAG-1) is moored in the capital ship area of the basin.
USS Benham, a Fletcher-class destroyer, served with distinction in the Pacific theatre during World War Two, ending the war with eight battle stars. In 1960 she was sold to Peru, and scrapped there in 1980. She is in Mayport during the spring of 1959 conducting carrier familiarization training.
USS Blandy was a Forrest Sherman-class destroyer. Commissioned in 1957, Blandy served in conflicts around the world throughout the Cold War. She was decommissioned in 1982. In this photo, she and USS Boston had recently transported the remains of the Unknown Soldier from Europe to the United States.
USS Boston, the first in her class, was first a heavy gun cruiser in World War Two, and was converted after the war to the first guided missile cruiser. She is distinguished by her two aft Terrier missile launchers and her two fore gun turrets, as well as her centrally located stack and the two radars accompanying her missile launchers just aft.Collection
