Description

Image of a lock construction near the C[u]lebra Cut in 1913. The Culebra Cut is the artificial valley that creates the divide in Panama linking the Gatun Lock, essentially the Atlantic Ocean, to the Pacific Ocean. It is seven miles from the Pedro Miguel Locks. Culebra is the name of the mountain range that it cuts through. The Culebra Cut name was changed to the "Gaillard Cut" after the US Major, David du Bose Gaillard, who led the excavation. From 1915-2000, the pass was called the Gaillard Cut. It was renamed the Culebra Cut in 2000.
