"Abraham Jones was granted an island on the west side of the St. Johns river on Jan. 12, 1770...This grant was Ortega, and Jones was its first settler and first private land owner. The island then bore its first name of record: Maxton's Creek Island. The Ortega River was known as Maxton's Creek."
