Christie Motley was a critical care nurse at St. Luke's Hospital in Jacksonville. She was aboard the Amtrak Sunset Limited when it derailed September 1994 in an Alabama bayou, killing 47 people. She set up a triage area and assisted injured passengers until help arrived. She received the Meritorious Public Service Award from the U.S. Coast Guard. The city of Jacksonville proclaimed March 16, 1994 Christie Motley Day.
Nicotine Patch Study: The study involved 240 smokers from Jacksonville, Rochester, and Scottsdale who smoked at least a pack-a-day. Half were assigned a nicotine patch while other half received as placebo patch. Study showed that patches are an effective way for people to stop smoking but the same dose may not be good for everyone. Dianna Cox and Pat Owens, St. Luke's employees in the Admitting Department, started wearing the patches Feb. 1994.Collection
