Selected contents, Nov. 1991: Back to the future in Jacksonville / John Paul Jones includes information on SPAR (Springfield Preservation & Restoration, Inc.) and includes history on Springfield such as being platted as a subdivision of Jax in 1882 but wasn't incorporated until 1887. C.L. Robinson gave the name "Springfield" to the area because a spring in the area north of Hogan's Creek produced fine water. First public works plant built here that was c omleted in 1880 and named Waterworks Park. The first electric trolley went up Main St. to the park. Springfield was selected as the site for the Sub-Tropical Exposition which opened in 1888. At the outbreak of the Spanish-American War in 1898, a massive training camp that held about 28,000 troops at one time was located here.General Fitzhugh Lee, son of Robert E. Lee, gave the name "Cuba Libre" to the camp. William Jennings Bryan was stationed there. Since Springfield was sparred from the fire of 1901, a building boom followed went into the 1920s. The area became known as the the "Gateway to Downtown." Henry Klutho designed a home for his family that was built on Main Street, later moved to 30 East 9th St. Confederate Park hosted many events of the Confederate Veterans Reunion in 1914, a gathering of about 48,000 veterans. On Jan. 22, 1987, the area was recognized as a national historic district and placed on the National Register of Historic Places; Antique Trail briefly describes various Jax area antiques in Jax area such as Marilyn Foster Rugs & Antiques, Gallery of Antiques & Collectibles, E. William Nash Antiques, Lamp Post Antique Mall, Very Collectible.
