Description

xvi, 244 pages : illustrations, portraits ; 23 cm. An American Association for State and Local History guide to making public history edited by Bob Beatty. American Association for State and Local History book series Includes an index. Summary: Featuring essays from some of the leading thinkers in the profession, this book not only looks at major themes as they relate to historians’ work but also inspires creativity in how they approach their work in an institutional and personal sense. The themes themselves are important, but even more important are the articles (presented here as chapters) that amplify the overarching themes. Chapters discuss in-depth and through real-world examples, the work of history organizations. They specifically focus on the challenges and opportunities that are important to any nonprofit (or small business) - entrepreneurship, change, transformation, possibility/opportunity, partnerships - but also those unique to history organizations, leverage the asset of history to: explore place, commemorate the past (and therefore better understand the present), demonstrate how it is people who make history, and discern how to use the past to chart the future... publisher Contents: Foreword -- / Cinnamon Catlin-Legutko Introduction / Bob Beatty -- The Only Thing that is Constant is Change / Barbara Franco and Laura B. The posts linked to maps pinpointing his progress across the ocean. Power of transformation chapter highlights Harriet Beecher Stowe Center in New Hartford, Conn. which moved from offering a static historic house tour to a community and national leader in social justice. The Conn. Historical Society also is highlighted focusing on their launch of new collections-based affinity groups and a crowd sourced exhibit titled Conn.: 50 objects/50 stories. Entrepreneurship in history organizations chapter suggests the use of a 3 month innovation cycle to encourage development of new projects. Projects noted were local programs based on the tv program Antiques Roadshow. Ghost tours, Halloween programming and a lecture about the history of spiritualism in the 19th century were sponsored by the Cape May, New Jersey, MAC.
