History: In 1918, upon learning of the signing of the Armistice ending the World War on Nov.11th, the Jacksonville Rotary Club, led by George Hardee, puts forth a proposal for a memorial to Florida's war dead, to be paid for by the citizens of the region and erected in a new park in Jacksonville. In 1919, a Citizens Committee was formed to plan the park led by George Hardee, Morgan Gress, Ninah Cummer, Edith Gray and Mary B. Cline. Over the following years, the Committee selects Charles Pillars to create a sculpture, asks Dr. Hume for suggestions for park designers, and raises money. In 1922 Ninah Cummer invites Olmstead Brothers representative J. F. Dawson to discuss the park. In 1923, Ninah Cummer worked with Dr. Hume of Glen St. Mary Nursery to review Olmstead Brothers Dawson's planting design. In 1924, construction is sufficiently completed for the sculpture to be set and the park is dedicated on Christmas Day. Many photographs. Includes copies of correspondence between Ninah Cummer and Mr. Dawson.
