Description

520 pages : illustrations, portraits ; 32 cm History of the Rotary Club of Jacksonville : Florida's first club 1912-2012. Authors preface: Club organized a committee to combine and complete this Club Centennial History book. The first 50 year history book, Volume 1, was written by club member Prim Fischer. It was re-published later to include the first 56 years. The next 18 years, volume 2, had 18 authors, since each president wrote their own summary. This Centennial History combines the first two volumes and completes them with the next 25 years of Club history. Each Club president wrote about his or her own year in Rotary with the exception of deceased members Max Morris and Dave Hastings. Centennial edition. National history: Rotary founder, Paul Harris, moved to Jax in 1892 and took a job as a salesman in the marble and granite company owned by George W. Clark. Harris attempted to organize a businessman's club but his effort wasn't successful. After he left Jax, he founded the 1st Rotary Club in Chicago in 1905. Through his continued friendship with Clark, Harris influenced the Chicago Rotary Club to elect as honorary members Clark and Jax attorney David D. Doig. Without that friendship, Jacksonville may not have joined Rotary's family so early. Jacksonville history: George W. Clark was the first presiden of the Rotary Club of Jacksonville. The Chicago club sent a prominent member to Jacksonville to assist in organizing it. On February 13, 1912, at the Windsor Hotel downtown at Hemming Park, 14 businessmen met and officially organized. Members gathered weekly for lunch at the Windsor Hotel and later at the Aragon Hotel. By the end of the first year the 14 members had grown to 71. Presidents from 1912 through 1949-1950: Harry B.
