History of Naval Air Station Mayport: Before this base was operational, there was a Frontier Section base at Mayport. per Congressional Record, Nov. 8, 2017 : 1939, the Mayport area was selected for the new base. Lt. Commander Maynard R. Sanders assumed command of the new U.S. Navy Base
in October 1940. Construction began immediately and Building 1, the Administration Building, was opened on Nov. 4, 1941. Although the plans for Mayport being a carrier base were put on hold, the base became a
vital crash and patrol boat training facility.
Mayport village information, published in the Jan.27, 1989 issue, included an article about the 4 lighthouses of Mayport with the first erected in 1830 at a cost of $24,500.
