Mayport : What's in a name? by Joe Pickett. This article was submitted to the Public Affairs Office of Naval Station Mayport on March 31, 1989 per pencil notation in upper right corner of typewritten article for approval and publication in the Mirror, Naval Station Mayport base newspaper. It was published in the Mirror, April 7, 1989. Have newspaper with article as well as a copy of typed article.. Mr. Pickett notes Hazzard as a former name for Mayport and hypothesizes its origin. Mayport Mills was a later short-lived name and changed after the Civil War to Mayport.
