Education -- Old Mayport by Joe Pickett
This article was submitted to the Public Affairs Office of Naval Station Mayport on Jan.19, 1990 per pencil notation in upper right corner for approval and publication in the Mirror, the Naval Station Mayport base newspaper.
The written record of the history of education in the Mayport area begins with the 1902-1903 school year with mention of 3 schools: PS 12 for white students, PS 115 for Black students, and an unnumbered school for white students in East Mayport. Predating these schools was a school for Black students in East Mayport in a building also used as a church and sat on the old JMP railroad bed. Teachers, principals, and stories remembered by former students are included.
