History of Mayport : Home away from home by Joe Pickett. 2 copies of article. No date of submission or publication noted. The new United Services Organization Center (USO) was dedicated on Feb. 14, 1942 in Jacksonville Beach and replaced the USO located on the 2d floor of a building located at Beach Blvd and North Second Street. Jack Jones, a community leader, persuaded the city of Jax Beach to donate land for a new Center. It was well-staffed with 2 Senior Hostesses, 40 Junior Hostesses and several civilian volunteers. Two former Junior Hostesses were interviewed, Jane Craig and Toni Hutchinson. Includes information on various activities held at the USO including a monthly birthday party and the help provided by Naval Station Mayport bakers as there were so many Nov. 1942 birthdays a very large cake was needed.
