Description

History of Mayport : Navy auxiliary air station, Mayport from ships to planes by Joe Pickett. 2 articles, original and rewritten versions. This article was submitted to the Public Affairs Office of Naval Station Mayport on Nov. 28,1990 per pencil notation in upper right corner for approval and slated for publication in the Mirror, the Naval Station Mayport base newspaper. Then the article was pulled from publication on Dec. 5, 1990 and rewritten as the date of commissioning was in question. New information was received that proved it was on a Saturday, April 1, 1944 not April 2. The article was resubmitted for publication after Dec.5, 1944. Discrepancies between written and photographic records of the commissioning of the Naval Auxiliary Air Station (NAAS) at Mayport states that one option is April 1, 1944 but, several photographs of event, are dated April 2nd, 1944. Based on the assumption that these printed records are suspect, I am accepting the date of April 2, 1944 as the correct date, based on the photographic records in the base library. When LCDR M. P. Merritt assumed command, the fates of CDR Maynard F. Sanders and the Frontier Section Base were sealed.
