Description

History of Mayport : 1942 a world turned upside down by Joe Pickett. 2 copies of article. This article was submitted to the Public Affairs Office of Naval Station Mayport on July 19, 1990 per pencil notation in upper right corner for approval and publication in the Mirror, the Naval Station Mayport base newspaper. Summary: United States had been warned as early as Dec. 1941 that German submarines would be sent to interdict shipping along the Florida coast line. Admiral Adlophus Andrews had been putting together a fleet of ships to counter the attack but by early January 1942, he could only muster a fleet of 20 small vessels. After May 1942, the u-boat activities along the coastline of northeast Florida and Georgia began to wane.
