Description

History of Mayport : Pearl Harbor - a day of infamy by Joe Pickett. 2 different drafts (not dated) and article included This article was submitted to the Public Affairs Office of Naval Station Mayport on July 13,1990 per pencil notation in upper right corner for approval and publication in the Mirror, the Naval Station Mayport base newspaper. Men of the Second Division, Southside Armory, reported as soon as they heard the news of the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Rumors were rampart. After the muster roll was called by Chief Petty Officer John Holland and everyone was accounted for, a short and informal service of prayer was held. Within a month's time following the attack, officers and enlisted men of the Second Division were transferred to the new section base at Mayport. From January 1942 to the conclusion of the war, the new base was a hub of activity. Here, newly inducted personnel were trained in anti-submarine warfare, mine sweeping, gunnery practice and military discipline. They also went on coastal patrol duty at night in the off-shore waters of northeast Florida and Georgia and had at least 2 encounters with German U-boats. However, the section base and its personnel were ill-equipped and ill-prepared to help defeat invasion attempts and to keep the coastal supply open during 1942. For instance, there were insufficient ammunition for the rifles assigned to the men and often radios didn't function properly. In 1945, Japan was brought to its knees by the most devastating weapon in the history of warfare.
