U-boat activity close to home by Joe Pickett, Station Librarian. This article was submitted to the Public Affairs Office of Naval Station Mayport for approval and publication in the Mirror, the Naval Station newspaper. Have typed article and newspaper article dated July 21, 1989. An article in the Florida Times Union about a minefield three miles east of the mouth of the St. Johns River was of interest to Joseph Brown. He was a resident of Mayport and a navy veteran stationed at Mayport from the beginning of the base until reassigned in 1943. According to Joe, word had been received that a submarine may have mined the entrance to the river (Oct. or Nov. 1942) and efforts to locate the mine were undertaken. The tug Umpqua was converted to minesweeping duties. The first sweep triggered and exploded a mine followed by a second explosion as the tug proceeded northward. As the tug was damaged by this second explosion, another sweeper was sent to Mayport which exploded 3 more mines. The author began to research the activities of German submarines along the Florida coast between 1941 and the end of 1942. On August 8, 1942 the German submarine U-98 skippered by Robert Gysae laid 12 magnetic mines just off the mouth of the river. The rest of the article describes Gysae's submarine career and his various successful ship sinking's. So somewhere out there- 1000 yards east of the north jetty -- records say that 12 mines were laid by U-98. Those same records say that no ships were lost because of them.Collection
